1. Recruit/Access Worksite

treadmillIf you are an employer interested in implementing healthful nutrition and physical activity strategies in your own worksite, you will not need to worry about recruitment.  You can get started on developing your wellness plan.

If you are a public health advocate (such as a county health department nurse) and you want to reach out and encourage local employers to adopt nutrition and physical activity strategies, you will need to identify employers who want to work with you on this project.

There are many ways to recruit employers.  Here are two examples that have been used by city-county health departments in Montana:

The Missoula City-County Health Department recruited worksites by sending surveys to 250 local employers to ask them about wellness strategies already in place at their worksites and to find out whether or not these employers might be interested in working with the health department to improve nutrition and physical activity opportunities for employees.  You can download the SAMPLE QUESTIONNAIRE (word doc 112KB) and modify it to fit your specific needs.

The Flathead City-County Health Department recruited worksites by talking with other county departments about the benefits of worksite wellness and then offering to help those departments develop wellness plans.

No matter how you recruit worksites, the important thing is to make sure that you recruit employers who have a sincere interest in worksite wellness and the many benefits it offers.
