Screen Time Reduction

Cartoon

Why should you care about limiting TV or screen time?

According to a recent research article overweight and obesity among American children has reached epidemic proportions.  More than 9 million youth between the ages of six and nineteen years are considered overweight, and more than 80 percent of overweight adolescents will go on to become obese adults.  Research has indicated a wide range of factors believed to contribute to obesity among children, but of growing concern is the potential contribution made by children’s media use.*

Study after study demonstrates that by reducing television, videos, electronic games and recreational use of computers is a leading way to reduce obesity, increase literacy and standardized test scores and dramatically curtail acts of violence and bullying. Because media use is such an important factor affecting our children’s health and it is so pervasive in our society, it is important that we work together to address this issue.
