Montana Food Access Map

Link to Interactive Food Access map

The Montana Food Access Map is designed to allow users to seek food availability and food procurement sites. The map does not represent the entire food system, only sites where consumers acquire, buy and grow food: grocery and convenience stores, farmers’ markets, school gardens/green houses, food banks, commodity stores, community-supported farms (CSA’s), WIC-direct farms, community garden, and dollar stores.

Most data points were collected from July 2010 to November 2010 via GPS and internet, with a few collected via site visits. Two categories that may have gaps are school gardens/greenhouses, and community gardens; these categories may have missing schools and communities due to lack of available information. Our hope is to acquire a more accurate list and then update the map.

The map is overlaid with the most recent U.S. census (2010) population density and includes available public transportation, as well as state highways. This information helps portray Montana’s food access more fully: showing places of abundance as well as food deserts.
